"She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses," cried the young Student; "but in all my garden there is no red rose."

From his couch of mossy green, where he was dreaming over many a quaint and pretty thing, he sprang up and ran through the garden like a madman. He looked for white roses, and found their delicate buds like snow-drops on every bush. He looked for yellow roses, and saw them smiling in the sunshine, their heads nodding gently to the breeze. But for a red rose—no! There was not a single red rose in his garden.

He looked round the bed of daffodils, and asked, "Will you give me a red rose?"

"No, indeed," answered the Daffodils; "and for this reason, among others, being a Rose is our proud distinction."

Then he asked of the Lilies, and they expressed themselves quite as disdainfully. The Poppies were bright, but they were very unwilling; the Peonies were more than usually silent and demure. Each one of them replied to his earnest suit with the same refusal.

"How happy I am!" cried the Nightingale. "I have found at last what the poet sings about—'Love that is pure, love that never alters.' It is better even than my own love. What joy it must be to press those lips to one's own in such a kiss as that!"
